The St. Patrick’s Day festivities are well underway with less than three weeks until the big day.
Wednesday night the wife of the 2019 Grand Marshal’s was presented with her sash for the parade. Lisa Counihan was filled with emotion but did not want us to capture her tears on camera.
She tells me she is excited to take on the grand role for one of the biggest celebrations in the country, “it’s huge, it monumental to say the least.”
A celebration like no other is how she and many others describe it. She says she’s ready for the big day and will be by Jerry Counihan’s side decked in green.
“It’s a great honor. this is something my husband has dreamt about his whole life. and it’s a big honor for our family. this is the third Counihan who has been the grand marshal,” Counihan says.
Jerry Counihan is a part of a legacy. His father served as Grand Marshal in 1988 and his brother in 2017. But this isn’t only special for the Counihan’s also Glenda Rossiter. Rossiter is the wife of the 2008 Grand Marshal. She was present to provide Lisa with some words of encouragement and share her memories as they pass down the torch.
“The best thing about is when all of our children and their children come home. So it’s a big family reunion and we see people friends we haven’t seen in a long time,” Rossiter said.
A weekend to bring thousands together for Irish traditions, music, fun, and shenanigans. And of course a pot of luck from mother nature.
“That we have a very safe and wonderful St. Patrick’s Day and the weather is good,” Counihan says.
“If you have good weather you don’t have to worry about anything else because that takes care of itself,” Rossiter said.
The News 3 team are also hoping for good weather because we will bring you highlights from the parade. We also asked Counihan if she’s prepared for the walk. She tells News 3 she’ll have her flip flops in the car.
