It all came down to the final game of the regular season. Savannah State’s season would either end Saturday afternoon or, with a win, the Tigers would live to fight another day in the conference tournament.
Savannah State jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and held off Bethune-Cookman to clinch the final spot in the MEAC tournament.
The Tigers scoring started from the bottom of the order. In the second inning, Derek Rivera tied the game up at one with a hard grounder between first and second base. The home team was far from finished that inning. The next batter, Jalen Atterbury, smacked an RBI single and scored himself when Joseph Roberson hit a double down the right field line.
Tyler Robison (3-4) pitched a complete game with four strikeouts, giving up just two earned runs for his third win on the year.
As if the day didn’t have enough highlights, Savannah State graduate and NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe chimed in on the Tigers big win.
The MEAC Baseball Tournament begins Wednesday, May 15th in Dayton Beach, Florida.
