May River boys soccer dominates in first state championship title

Sports

New to the state championship scene, the May River boys soccer didn’t waste any time. Conner Golden scored a hat-trick and the Sharks netted six goals on the way to a 6-2 SCHSL AAA state championship win over Indian Land.

“I couldn’t have done it without my team behind me,” Golden said post-game. “We’ve worked for it this whole season to win this game. It means alot not just to me but to this entire team.”

Golden got the scoring started for May Rive early in the game and Joel Fleek’s header in the 42nd minute gave the Sharks a 2-0 lead headed into halftime.

“Two years ago our first year we had nine of eight freshman on the team and we took some bumps,” head coach Misael Garzon said. “The growth we’ve shown is unreal this is the conclusion of these boys believing in and trusting and growing with one another.”

The Sharks knocked out powerhouse Bishop England in the Final Four to secure the program’s first state championship berth. May River has been around for just three years but the players say they are determined to become mainstays atop the state soccer rankings.

“This is our first state championship,” Golden said. “We’ll bring it back to May River High School and get some more.”
