It’s International Cat Day. A day to celebrate and advocate for your feline friends.

According to the Holidays Calendar website, International Cat Day was created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). IFAW a global non-profit that protects animals and the places they live.

We asked WSAV viewers to submit their favorite cat photos in honor of the holiday – and boy did you all show out.

Although it’s fun to see all the cute pictures on International Cat Day, it also serves as a day to remind people about all of the cats still in animal shelters.

As of 2016, there are about 3.4 million cats that enter shelters in the United States each year, according to PETA. And of those, about one third will be euthanized.

If you are interested in adopting, or even donating a few supplies to local shelters, visit our Clear the Shelters page here. We’ve listed area shelters as well as needed donations.
