UPDATE: Savannah State University shooting suspect, victim identified


SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — One person is dead following a shooting Saturday afternoon at Savannah State University.

According to SSU, around 2:25 p.m. public safety received a report of shots fired in the vicinity of University Commons.

Law enforcement officials located 20-year-old Kaleel Clarke, a former student at SSU, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Clarke was transported to Memorial Hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.

According to SSU, Phillip Dayan Burke, 20, was on the scene when the shooting took place and has been arrested.

Burke is charged with carrying a weapon in a school safety zone and possession of a firearm or knife during commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies.

SSU officials say Burke is not a student at the school.

The campus was placed on lockdown for approximately two hours while police investigated.

The SSU Department of Public Safety and Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 912-358-3004.
