SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The body of a missing boater has been recovered from the Savannah River, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Around 11 a.m. Wednesday, DNR says barge workers spotted the body. Game wardens responded to the area and made the recovery a short time later.
DNR identified the man as Charles Bradford Keiffer, 42, of Hardeeville, South Carolina.
According to a family member, he went by Brad. He was on his way home with his wife and their 5-year-old son when they hit a barge and capsized.
Keiffer’s wife and son were rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment as the search for the 42-year-old continued.
The U.S. Coast Guard, DNR and other agencies continued searching for Keiffer into the night and the following day.
Around 8:45 p.m. Sunday, the Coast Guard suspended its search. DNR says their officers continued searching until Wednesday morning when Keiffer’s body was discovered.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise recovery funds. A family member says Keiffer’s wife will be undergoing surgery.
The DNR Law Enforcement Critical Incident Reconstruction Team is investigating the cause of the incident. The investigation is expected to take several weeks.
