PORT WENTWORTH, Ga. (WSAV) – Two people died in a crash that shut down a portion of Interstate 95 Tuesday morning.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, shortly before 5 a.m., troopers were dispatched to a vehicle crash involving pedestrians near mile marker 110.
GSP says three people had stopped their vehicle in the emergency lane and got out. Then, one passenger ran into the travel lanes “in an apparent suicide attempt.”
Live from the scene:
The driver of the vehicle ran onto the interstate to get the passenger back onto the side of the roadway. But another vehicle, traveling south in the middle lane, struck them.
They did not survive.
GSP has now released their identities: Miriam Jimenez, 48, and 19-year-old Jose Rodriguez, both from Texas.
Officials have not said who ran onto the interstate first.
All three lanes of I-95 southbound were closed for about three and a half hours. Traffic reopened around 8:15 a.m.
