Highway open following tanker truck fire in Georgetown

A tanker truck fire on the eastbound Abercorn Extension shut down the highway for hours on Wednesday.

Chatham County authorities say the driver of the truck lost control and hit the center median. The driver was able to exit the tanker without injury, but the vehicle caught fire.

Witnesses reported seeing thick, black smoke and hearing “an explosion” in the area.

Officials shut down eastbound traffic on the Abercorn Extension (Highway 204) at King George Blvd. at 12:15 p.m. The closures remained in place up until rush hour traffic.

Crews had to clear sewage and diesel fuel that spilled onto the roadway during the accident.

Southside Fire and EMS, the Chatham Emergency Management Agency and other agencies responded to the scene.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
