A young woman died and four people were seriously injured in a crash on Victory Drive Thursday.
Around 12:30 p.m., crews responded to the two-vehicle crash next to El Coyote restaurant on Whitaker Street.
According to the Savannah Police Department (SPD), it appears one driver had a medical episode causing him to run a red light and crash into another car.
SPD says Mark Greely, 44 of Richmond Hill, was traveling with two passengers – Claudia Greely, 41, of Richmond Hill, and John Henry, of Indiana, Penn. – south on Whitaker Street towards Victory Drive.
Larry Cope, 24, of Savannah, was traveling west on Victory Drive approaching Whitaker Street with two passengers – Jabria Cope, 19, and Kamri Hazel-Young, 23, both of Savannah.
SPD says Greely’s vehicle crashed into the passenger side of Cope’s. Due to the impact, both vehicles rotated and hit the wall of El Coyote as well as a utility pole and traffic box.
Officials say the vehicles collided and then came to rest at El Coyote. According to Savannah Fire IAFF574, some individuals were trapped inside their vehicle.
Cope died as a result of her injuries, according to police. Except for Greely, all other passengers were seriously injured.
Savannah Police closed Victory Drive between Bull and Barnard streets as well as southbound Whitaker Street at 43rd Street as crews responded. All roads were back open by about 4:15 p.m.
