TRAFFIC ALERT: Controlled explosion scheduled in Savannah Wednesday morning

Savannah (SCMPD) – The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Bomb Squad, with support from Ft. Stewart’s Army EOD, will conduct a controlled explosion Wednesday morning.

A civil war-era cannonball landmine was found at an excavation site near Broughton and Barr Streets earlier today and will be detonated around 9:00AM Wednesday.

Authorities will begin blocking off the area around 8:30 a.m. Areas involved in the perimeter include:

-Bay to Price Streets

-Houston at Bay Streets

-East Broad Ramp at River Street

-Oglethorpe Avenue at East Broad Street

-Broughton at Houston Streets

-St. Julian at Houston Streets

-President at Houston Streets

-President Street at Westbound Truman Parkway

Citizens in the area between Broughton and Barr and East Broad and Bay are being asked to evacuate as a precaution. Surrounding businesses and schools should shelter in place until an all clear signal is given.

Folks around the area should expect to hear a loud explosion. Pedestrians and spectators will not be allowed in the perimeter or the surrounding area. Police advise you to exercise caution and patience during the process. Traffic is expected to be impacted for at least two hours.
