A reported tornado caused extensive damage Thursday Night in Johns Island… southwest of downtown Charleston, South Carolina.
It was associated with an area of surface low pressure moving up and along the South Carolina coast. As bands of showers and thunderstorms moved onshore around midnight along the middle South Carolina coast… cells began rotating and produced at least one touchdown.
The Johns Island storm moved through around 12:50am with a tornado warning issued for that area of Charleston county by the National Weather Service.
Debris from the tornado was picked up on Doppler radar images of the storm.
The local fire department in Johns Island reported 10 homes suffered heavy damage… blowing out windows and sending trees onto roofs and flipping over a trailer. Numerous streets were closed because of downed trees and power lines.
Fortunately no injuries were reported.
At least 9,000 power customers lost power as a result of the storm. All power was expected to be restored by mid morning.
The National Weather Service said it would send a survey team to Johns Island and West Ashley late this morning to assess the damage and determine how strong the tornado was.
