Summer lunch program Adds Library Site in Savannah

News

Summer break is just a couple weeks away for most kids in the region and the effort to make sure they don’t go hungry is set to go.  The biggest food pantry in our region is set to prepare nearly 10-thousand meals a day for thousands of kids.  This is the first summer Live Oaks Libraries is teaming up with America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia.  If the summer pilot lunch program at the Bull Street Library goes well here this year — it will branch out to other libraries next summer.  This summer it’s one of more than sixty locations where children can get up to two nutritious meals a day.

It’s busy inside the Second Harvest warehouses and kitchen.  They have been a leader in initiatives to reduce childhood hunger since it established Kids café in 1989.  Executive Director Mary Jane Crouch says summer feeding is essential to ensuring proper nutrition for children at-risk for hunger since they do not have access to free or reduced-price school lunches when school is out of session.  ” For a lot of families, they really struggle because of summer vacation.  You know, you don’t make any more money because your child’s outta school so you’ve go to come up with someone to take care of your children or what happens a lot of times you have a lot of latch-key children, you know, 8 year olds looking after 6 year olds…or 10 year olds… So this way in their neighborhoods, they can get something to eat.”  Crouch said.

Second Harvest will provide tens of thousands of balanced meals for kids at risk for hunger in Appling, Bulloch, Chatham, Effingham, Evans, Liberty, Tattnall, Toombs, and Wayne counties.   ” The kids are always very excited.  The meals are great.  We make ’em very child-friendly in the summer.  We do a lot of salads and things so it’s something necessarily so heavy, but it’s something that’s nutritionally….good for them.”  said Crouch.    .  Meal distribution to children will begin June 1, 2015 and continue through the end of the summer break, wrapping up about a week  before the start of the fall term on August 6, 2015 .  The summer food program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture
