DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Reaction to House Speaker John Boehner’s sudden resignation was swift Friday.

Here is what some of our political leaders are saying:

Ohio Party Chairman Matt Borges:

I’m very saddened to learn of the news today. I commend Speaker Boehner for his leadership, his undeniable love for our country and his desire to serve Ohio and our great nation. It’s been remarkable for our state to have an Ohioan serve as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. I thank John for his many years of public service and wish him and Debbie all the best moving forward.”

US Senator Rob Portman:

John Boehner is a dear friend, a fellow Cincinnatian, and a proud Ohioan. He was a small business owner who first ran for office because he was frustrated with government, and that motivates him to this day. He has been a servant leader who never forgot where he came from, and, as Speaker, had the hardest job in American politics. He handled it with grace and dignity and will be missed. Jane and I wish him and Debbie all the best in the next chapter of their lives.”

Ohio Governor John Kasich:

Ohio and America are stronger today because of John Boehner. I’m proud that he’s my friend and that I served with him during a time of tremendous transformation and growth for our nation. He led ably then and as Speaker later because he listened to different views, respected the institution, and most important, respected the American people. He grew up humbly, overcame big obstacles to pull himself up by his bootstraps and never forgot where he came from. He leaves a legacy of unparalleled integrity and steady, mature leadership during difficult times that will be a model for future Speakers and anyone interested in public service.”

Congressman Mike Turner:

I have appreciated Speaker Boehner’s leadership throughout his time in Congress and in the Ohio delegation. His dedication to the country and his constituents never wavered throughout his many years of service and I wish him all the best.”

RNC statement:

I want to thank Speaker Boehner for his efforts to make our party, the state of Ohio, and our nation stronger. He has been a tireless advocate for conservative principles who has raised millions to elect and re-elect Republicans to the House of Representatives. Our party owes him a great debt, and I wish him and Debbie the best as he continues to make contributions to the Republican Party and America.”

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted:

One of the great and unique things about America is that, no matter who you are or what type of life your family lives, you can be successful and you can be a leader in our society. John Boehner is living proof of the American Dream having grown up in very modest means with 11 brothers and sisters, he rose to become the Speaker of the House of Representatives.”
