(NBC news) — Cesar Sayoc, the man accused of mailing more than a dozen pipe bombs to prominent critics of President Trump, was captured outside of an auto parts store in Plantation, Florida Friday.
He’s now facing five federal charges that could result in 48 years in prison.
Sayoc has a long criminal history including drug, theft and burglary charges in Minnesota, North Carolina and Florida dating back to the late 1990s.
He received probation, with no admission of guilt, after he was charged with making a bomb threat against Florida Power and Light in 2002, saying the blast would be “worse than September 11th.”
A cousin, who wants to remain anonymous, tells NBC News Sayoc was “kicked out” of his parents home when he was a teenager and at times lived in a van, saying “He’s always been a little bit of a loose cannon. He’s always been a lost soul.”
His cousin also says he never knew him to be politically active.
Still, the van he was driving when he was arrested is tattooed with partisan stickers and his social media footprint includes threats against high-profile Democrats.
