TSA wants to give travelers a chance to get to their gate and plane quicker.
Its called Pre-check. 6 million people already use it, and TSA claims 94% of those spend less than 5 minutes in the security line.
“TSA Precheck is an expedited screening process where you get to keep on your shoes, your light outerwear, your belts,” explained Mark Howell, TSA Spokesperson. “and you can keep your liquids in your bag when you are going trhough the security checkpoint.”
54 airlines 200 airports are involved in the program, including Savannah-Hilton Head International, which will be holding a special pre-check sign up event next month.
But you don’t have to wait.
TSA has created pre check spots in cities around the country.
There’s one in Pooler, and inside the Staples store on Highway 278 in Bluffton.
“You go in to enroll, they are going to ask you to bring a couple forms of ID in, they are going to verify your citizenship and they are going to ask you a couple quetsions to verify your identity. They will take some fingerprints.” said Howell.
“If you are approved about two weeks later you will get a letter in the mail with your “no traveler number” and you will use that number when you look your travel to get the TSA pre check logo on your boarding pass.”
It’s only available to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
TSA claims the whole process takes only 10-15 minutes, and the safety and security is the same as the regular, slow lanes. So you aren’t sacrificing anything.. but your time.
“If you travel more than a couple times a year i think its definitely worth looking into the program” said Howell
The TSA pre check program will cost you $85 but lasts for 5 years.
