Teen suicide rates up dramatically

Local News
suicide among teens

Two teens committed suicide over the weekend; one in Savannah, another on Hilton Head.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, suicide among 10 to 17-year-old whites is up 70 percent and in the same age group blacks up 77 percent from 2006 to 2016.

In May 2017, pediatric hospitals found admissions of patients ages 5 to 17 for suicidal thoughts, idealization and actions more than doubled from 2008 to 2015. White males ages 14 to 21 are at the highest risk for suicide but the sudden surge in black teen suicide is higher.

Vanessa Riley lost her son, Sean, to suicide twelve years ago.

For the past nine years, she’s organized the “Out of Darkness” Walk in Hilton Head and Bluffton after going to her first one in Charleston.

These awareness and fundraising walks are nationally organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
