RAVENEL, S.C. (WCBD) – A deputy with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) was released from the hospital Sunday night after being injured during a traffic stop shooting.
Officials tell News 2 that Deputy Evan Cubbage was struck three times during an exchange of gunfire with a suspect in the afternoon.
Deputy Cubbage stopped a vehicle along Savannah Highway in the Ravenel area around 3:45 p.m., when the passenger of the vehicle opened fire.
Cubbage was struck. He and a second deputy, Alexander Hodge who provided assistance during the traffic stop, returned fire and hit the man. The suspect died at the scene.
Deputy Hodge was not injured; the female driver of the vehicle was detained. News 2 later learned the driver was turned over to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
Deputy Cubbage was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Fellow deputies and CCSO command staff were on hand to show support when he was released from the hospital at about 9 p.m., according to a sheriff’s office spokesman. Cubbage has been with CCSO since August 2020.
“This traffic stop highlights the danger that our deputies face day in and day out,” Sheriff Kristin Graziano said. “They have to put themselves in harm’s way. We are very fortunate that these two deputies survived this incident.”
The deputies involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave, per protocol.
“CCSO also conducts an internal investigation into all shootings involving its deputies,” the agency said.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office will identify the man when appropriate.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
