Update: Aiken County Detention Center resumes normal operations after lockdown

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WJBF/AP) — The Aiken County Detention Center is no longer on lockdown. According to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), normal operations have resumed at the detention center.

According to the Associated Press. officials say about 50 inmates were involved in what Aiken County jail workers called a riot.

There were no reports of any injuries.

According to the ACSO, there was one inmate who was causing a disturbance.

After the inmate didn’t comply with orders, “the entire pod became one big disturbance,” according to Captain Eric Abdullah of the ACSO.

Then jail staff pulled back from the facility and called in additional resources. “It was a massive response,” Capt. Abdullah added.

Officials continue to investigate the incident.
