A single-vehicle crash caused a “large gas leak” downtown Thursday night, prompting area evacuations.

The accident occurred just before 7:30 p.m. on Drayton and Bryan streets.

Officials say the driver had a medical emergency, causing them to crash into a gas line near The Olde Pink House.

No word on the driver’s condition at this time.

The gas company worked for just over an hour to cap the line, digging up a portion of the road to access it.

As of 9:15 p.m. Savannah Fire & Emergency Services reports the gas leak has been mitigated and levels are being checked in area buildings.

Bay Street remained open to traffic. Officials reopened all streets at 9:30 p.m. apart from Bryan Street between Drayton and Abercorn streets.
