Senior Citizens Inc. to hold ninth annual ‘Miles for Meals’ 5k this weekend

Local News

Looking ahead now Senior citizens Incorporated Is holding their ninth annual ‘Miles for Meals’ 5k run. The event helps provide healthy meals to needy seniors in our community.

More than 400 seniors in just Chatham county alone need healthy, more wholesome diets, yet it only takes six dollars a day to prepare fresh nutritional meals and wellness checks for them.

For eight years and counting SCI has been a helping hand in trying to change that.

“We are all getting older and we all want to have the life we spent our time setting up and that’s what Senior Citizens Inc. is about,” said Patti Lyons, Director of Senior Citizens Inc.

She has worked with the organization for 10 years.”I came here having no idea this was going to be something that tugged at my heart for so many years and it always will,” Lyons said.

It is the growing number of malnourished seniors across the United States that consumes Lyons more than anything.

“The sad truth is, in America one-third of every older adult over the age of 65 ends up in the hospital and extends their stay because they are malnourished and the cost for one day in the hospital is the same as us feeding them for an entire year,” said Lyons.

All proceeds from SCI’s 5k will benefit their Meals on Wheels program, which currently delivers more than 5,500  hot healthy meals weekly to homebound seniors in our area.

“We are really trying to make sure that older adults remained part of this tapestry of our community and we are going to have people who are recipients come out here and cheer on our walkers and runners and it’s a great way for people to see directly that they are making a difference,” said Lyons.

In the past, people of all ages have participated in the event even dressing up as a vegetable to drive the message home.

For the first time ever the race will start right on the front lawn of SCI’s main building off of Bull Street.

“People are welcome to come out and its a great way to show older adults that the community cares,” said Lyons.

Runners and walkers will strap on their sneakers at 9 in the morning in front of Senior Citizens Inc. headquarters on Bull Street. Packet pickup for anyone participating is Friday from 10 in the morning to 6 p.m. at the same location.
