TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) – A search for a missing swimmer on Tybee Island is now a recovery effort, Tybee City Manager Shawn Gillen said Monday morning.

According to the city, the fire department cleared the sandbar just before 6 p.m. Sunday, but around 7 p.m. crews were called to the south end of the island for several swimmers who were in trouble.

Two young swimmers were rescued after being caught in a current, but a third young man said to be a 17-year-old student at New Hampstead High School in Bloomingdale remains missing.

Tybee crews and the Coast Guard continued searching until 10:30 p.m. Sunday. They resumed efforts early Monday morning.

Multiple agencies are now working to recover the young man, including the Tybee Island Fire Department, Tybee Island Police Department, U.S. Coast Guard, Chatham County EMS, Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Tybee Marine Rescue Squadron.
