TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) - Search efforts continue for two swimmers reported missing off Tybee Island's South Beach.
City Manager Shawn Gillen says the high tide took two of the four swimmers from the sandbar.
The report came in around 7:15 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13.
Fire officials conducted a water search along with Tybee Marine Rescue Squad, U.S. Coast Guard boat and helicopter rescue teams. Georgia DNR, Chatham Marine Patrol and Chatham Mosquito Control Helicopter also assisted.
The search continued until high tide at 10:30 p.m. and reconvened at 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
Gillen tells News 3 this is now a recovery effort, meaning they believe the swimmers did not survive.
He says crews will not leave the scene until the swimmers have been located.
