New safety markers put in place near dangerous Hwy. 278 intersection

Local News

New safety measures are now in place on Highway 278 on Hilton Head Island. The intersection is where 11-year-old Charli Bobinchuck was hit by a car and killed last summer. She was one of three pedestrian
or biking deaths last year.

Now there are new signs and paint designed to give everyone a warning.

Jeff Buckalew, an engineer for the town of Hilton Head, says, “Pavement markings and new signs–those are going to be standard for all un-signalized crosswalks. We are also going to install lights at the intersections of Yacht Cove and 278. There will be seven light poles. That will happen this summer, permitted with DOT. And it will be a pilot or demonstration project and if the town and public like it, we will do more of it.”

Town leaders also want drivers to remember to not stop at intersections for bikers or walkers that aren’t already in the road.
