A Lamarville street has been renamed thanks to a big community effort.
Koneman Avenue, which is perpendicular to Westlake Avenue, is now Ernest Major Jr. Drive.
He was a lifelong resident of Chatham County and a pillar of his community.
Family, friends, and neighbors gathered Thursday morning to honor his legacy and unveil the street sign.
His widow says the unveiling was a special moment.
“Ernest loved his community,” said Willie Mae Major. “He was known as the mayor of this community and I’m really proud of him for doing that.”
Major is credited with many of the improvements that benefited Lamarville and served as a mentor to many in his neighborhood.
