Horse & carriage protest prompts ‘open barn’ event

People protesting a cottage industry gathered in Savannah over the weekend. Now, one of the targets of that protest is countering with an event of their own.

About 25 people who support the Savannah Animal Advocacy gathered near Ellis Square on Saturday to protest the horse and carriage industry.

The protesters believe that even with city oversight, the horses are treated inhumanely because they are working.

The organizer of the event says they’d like to see the horse and carriage tours banned.

The owner of one of Savannah’s five horse and carriage tour companies is hosting an “open barn” event.

Carriage Tours of Savannah is opening its doors on Sunday, August 26 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Visitors can meet the vet and barn staff who care for their 18 horses. Everyone is welcome to the event at 802 Wheaton Street.
