SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – A driver was killed early Friday morning in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 16.

According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), the crash happened around 1:45 a.m. on the interstate near I-516 and Garden City.

The roadway was closed for about three hours as crews responded to the scene.

GSP says the driver of a black BMW was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-16 and struck a garbage truck head-on.

The driver died at the scene and his passenger was transported to Memorial Health with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, a trooper told WSAV.

At this time, the driver and passenger have only been identified as males.

The driver of the garbage truck did not sustain any injuries, according to GSP.

Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigation.
