EVANS, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia man is jailed because officials say he threatened to shoot his wife and himself after he was served with divorce papers.

Gary Pettus remained jailed without bail Monday in Columbia County following Sunday’s incident. He’s charged with false imprisonment, aggravated assault, battery, possession of a weapon during commission of a crime and three counts of cruelty to children.

Sheriff’s deputies tell local news outlets they found Pettus armed after one of the couple’s children reported the confrontation.

Pettus told deputies he went to the house after receiving divorce papers describing him as an “adulterer,” angering him. Deputies say Pettus drew a handgun and placed it against his wife’s forehead, threatening to kill her and them himself, leaving the children without parents.

It’s unclear if Pettus has a lawyer.
