ATLANTA (AP) – UPDATE: Georgia authorities have identified the two people killed in a fiery road crash as the drivers of a Volkswagen Passat and a tank truck that was hauling thousands of gallons of fuel.

News agencies report that Gwinnett County police say 31-year-old Emerald Lynn of Norcross had just stopped her car after an earlier accident Saturday on Interstate 85 northwest of Atlanta.

Police say 44-year-old Yonas Worku of Snellville was unable to stop his Freightliner in time to avoid the car. The truck overturned and exploded.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. (NBC) – UPDATE: New details have been revealed in a deadly crash that ended in flames near Atlanta Saturday morning.

Officials now confirm two people have died after the crash on I-85 near Jimmy Carter Boulevard Saturday morning.

Firefighters say when they got to the scene, a tanker fuel truck was on fire, and the fuel was spreading through a nearby sewer drain that ran under the highway. They say explosions were coming from the sewer manholes. Fuel emerged from one storm drain in front of a restaurant, causing a brush fire and knocking out power.

Lt. Justin Wilson of the Gwinnett County Fire Department said officials decided to let the fuel burn out because they knew it was already in the storm drains.

Police evacuated drivers from their cars during this time.

Officials say the fire damaged all the northbound lanes of I-85. They will have to be repaved before it can be reopened. The goal is to repave the road Saturday night and have it open sometime on Sunday.
