Community Corner: Penn Center celebrates ‘Heritage Days’ this weekend

It’s mission is to promote and preserve the history and culture of the Sea Islands.
This weekend, the annual Penn Center Heritage Days returns to Beaufort for the 36th year. 
Gardenia Simmons White is the chair of the Heritage Celebration Committee. She joins us with more.

Heritage Days Celebration is a three-day cultural event celebrating the Gullah/Geechee/Sea Island history, folk arts, food, music, crafts and West African cultural legacy.


Special events for the weekend include demonstrations of West African/Gullah cultural connections, including:

Live cultural demonstrations

Gullah storytellers and re-enactors

Singers, African drummers, and dancers

Educational symposium

Fish fry, crab crack & oyster roast

Back in the Day Jam

Parade

Center stage entertainment

Craft fair

Youth & Family Day with lots of educational “fun fuh de chillun and famlee” (fun for the children and family). 

There are no gate admission fees for 2018.  

There are costs for some Heritage events and food. 

Please bring your outdoor folding bag chairs for comfort.

Parking fee on Penn Center’s campus (East and West). Handicapped parking will be available.

$5 per car/truck/suv/van

$25 per tour bus
