The Beaufort County School District is closing one its alternative school at the end of the year, after it ranked in the bottom 5th percent of all schools in South Carolina.
Islands Academy is an alternative school for 6th through 12th grades in Burton, connected to the district administration building.
It was recently identified as a Comprehensive Support and Improvement School (CSI). CSI schools are defined as Title I schools performing at or below the 5th percentile of all schools in the state.
A spokesperson for the district could not tell News 3 the exact reason they are closing the school as of Saturday evening.
School Board Member David Striebinger said the school is closing due to its poor performance, but the board was not consulted and they have a lot of questions.
There will be a special board meeting Tuesday, Dec.18 at 5 p.m.
There will also be two informational sessions for parents, staff, and the community. One Tuesday, Dec 18 at 5:30 p.m. at Battery Creek High School. The other, Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 5:30 p.m. at Bluffton High School.
