SAVANNAH, Ga. – Former Chatham County Sheriff Roy Harris, along with Assistant Chatham County Attorney Jennifer Burns, are under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for destroying county documents.

The GBI were requested to investigate by District Attorney Meg Heap.

The Bureau’s findings will be turned over to the DA’s office and agents said they do not have an official timeline for when the investigation will conclude.

Sheriff John Wilcher, who defeated Harris in March’s special election, released the following statement:

“On my first full day in Office, I was informed by my senior administrative staff of some serious allegations.  I contacted the County Manager, County Attorney, and the District Attorney.  As a result the District Attorney referred the matter to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.  Since this matter remains under investigation by the GBI it would be inappropriate for me to make further comment.”
