SAVANNAH, GA (WSAV) – A man who spent a decade as senior pastor of Second African Baptist Church and who also served as a chaplain for local police faced a federal judge Wednesday.  Corey Brown MeGlll Grown is charged with 97 counts of wire and mail fraud for allegedly taking donations sent through mail by members of the congregation and converting more than $250,000 to his own use.

Brown pled not guilty and is free on an unsecured bond of $20,000 while awaiting trial. A number of people who said they were from the church were in the federal courtroom as he appeared with his attorney.

The judge placed a number of conditions on Brown including that Brown not have any contact with victims or witnesses in the case and that he not be allowed to be in charge of money anywhere where he may work.

Brown has not been a chaplain since late 2014. A statement from Savannah-Chatham Metro police said that Brown never had anything to do with handling funds during his association with the police force.
