Burton, SC (WSAV) – A Bluffton Police Officer broke down in tears Saturday night as he received a surprising gift that came from a brother in service.

Doug Armstead’s month had a terrible start. On December 1st his family home was destroyed by fire. But what’s most devastating to his family of seven is their beloved pet dog, Anni, perished in the fire.

Burton Firefighter Eric Swanson’s wife Lottie Campenella serves on the Firefighter Assistance Support Team and was at the fire scene. She witnessed Armstead’s reaction when he learned his dog didn’t survive. Days passed and Campenella spoke with a neighbor of the Armsteads to find out if they were interested in getting a new puppy. When the answer came back as a “yes,” Campenella and her husband got to work.

Saturday night Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus arrived to the Armstead’s temporary home aboard the Burton fire truck with the surprise delivery of a new German Shepherd puppy. Armstead’s reaction is warming hearts everywhere, as is the kindness from the firefighter and his wife.

As people applauded Swanson and his wife Sunday morning, Campenella wrote, “We’re all in this together. It’s the least we could do.”
