Savannah, Ga- As the count down continues for the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, one center here in Savannah is getting everyone ready for Olympic Day.
June 23rd is the official Olympic day, where more than 2,000 organizations celebrate the Olympics in the hopes to bring awareness to all the sports and get people active. Today, Saturday June 18th, members of the Coastal Empire Weightlifting Team performed demonstrations. The team is currently preparing for nationals in Austin, TX.
One weightlifter, Nia Walker has bigger dreams than just the Olympic Day. She wants to go all the way.
“I’m kind of hoping to go to the Olympics. It could be 2020 or 2024 anyone is good for me but I really want to go to the Olympics, that’s one of my goals.”
Kerri Goodrich is the founder of Weightlifting Team. She explains that competing in weightlifting offers more than just physical gain.
“You get to grow outside of yourself and learn more than just a small six block radius that you live in. So you learn to be a leader other than just a small community that you consider your neighborhood. So it changes your life in more than one way.”
