SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Investigators believe a discarded cigarette was the cause of a fire at the Country Inn and Suites on Wednesday.
Around 12:30 p.m. Savannah Fire crews were dispatched to the hotel on White Bluff Road, just south of Eisenhower.
Officials say heavy winds caused an ‘open area fire’ to blow through pine straw and plants and up the length of the building into the eaves.
The fire quickly spread into the attic and walls.
Employees and guests were evacuated when the fire was still contained outside. No one was injured.
White Bluff Road near the area was closed while emergency crews were on the scene.
Crews were able to bring the fire under control, but strong winds made the process difficult.
A ‘trench cut’ was made on the roof to keep the fire from further spreading down the attic.
