ST.HELENA ISLAND, S.C. – Investigators are working to identify the body found inside of a burnt shed on B. Wilson Drive on Friday morning. Firefighters say the call came in from a neighbor at about 8 a.m. as a brush fire. However, once firefighters got to the scene, they found a shed on fire. After they extinguished the flames, they found a body inside.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says it’s too soon to release the identity, since the body was badly burned. The Coroner is awaiting an autopsy conducted at the Medical University of South Carolina. Neighbors believe the person who died was an elderly man. Neighbors were on scene for much of Friday morning.

“When I left home this morning, everything was fine, but when I went to the nursery and back, it was smoke that I saw, [while] passing the driveway,” neighbor Bernard Wilson says.

Wilson’s home sits just across from the shed that burned, and the houses surrounding it. He hopes the cause of the fire and manner of the person’s death are not suspicious.

“All those are my neighbors, and so we always look out for one another,” Wilson says.

“The cause of the fire has not been established at this point. The sheriff’s office forensic services laboratory will be examining the fire debris that’s collected,” Captain Bob Bromage says.

wilson will continue to check on his neighbors, hoping for answers.

“The body was badly burned, so it’s going to take forensic science, dental records, or some kind of science to determine the identity of the decedent,” Bromage says.

Wilson hopes for answers soon.
