Billy Graham’s son-in-law found unresponsive in pool

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) – A former UNC basketball player from a championship team is in intensive care after he was found unresponsive in a pool at his home in Wake County on Monday afternoon, officials said.

The incident happened around 3:45 p.m. at a home in the 5900 block of Ponderosa Road, said Capt. Stevens with the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.

The home is owned by Daniel and Anne Lotz, according to Wake County property records.

Anne Graham Lotz is a daughter of the Rev. Billy Graham and founded AnGeL Ministries in Raleigh.

She discovered her husband, Dr. Daniel “Danny” Lotz unresponsive in the pool at their home, she wrote on Facebook Monday night.

Dr. Lotz is a former dentist in the Raleigh area and a UNC Chapel Hill basketball player who was on the 1957 team that won the NCAA National Championship.

Jim Young, who is a Graham family friend, told WNCN that Lotz is age 78 years old.

Monday night, Anne Lotz posted a message on Facebook thanking people for their prayers.

“He is currently in a hospital ICU receiving excellent care. There are no answers yet as to the outcome. The family is standing firm in faith, trusting Jesus. Thank you for your prayers.”

Young said Lotz has suffered from diabetic seizures for the past several years, and is on dialysis, which has required hospital visits in the past.

It’s unclear if his diabetes had anything to do with this near-drowning, Young said.

Young said Lotz leads a bible study every Friday with 80-100 men in Raleigh and he’s done that for the past 30 years.

Young is the President of Capitol Commission, which is a Christian outreach organization.
