MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The National Weather Service has released some wet weather driving tips.  According to the Federal Highway Administration, the majority of weather-related car crashes happen on wet pavement while it’s raining.

Weather experts say common sense is the best defense against severe weather when you’re behind the wheel.

  • Slow down
  • Allow more travel time
  • Allow twice the normal following distance between cars to provide ample room for stopping
  • Do not use cruise control
  • Avoid hard breaking or turning sharply
  • Make sure your headlights are on in the rain – it’s the law
  • If you feel your car beginning to skid, continue to look and steer in the direction you want the car to go. Don’t panic, and avoid slamming on the brakes to maintain control.
  • Be sure to get a weather update before departing
