In the 1800s, a former St. Simons Island resident, Rev. William Hamilton, founded the first Black Baptist church in Trinidad.
Gullah Geechee people from Glynn and Camden counties made up the membership.
This church would lay the foundation for the Afro-Caribbean religious group known as the Spiritual Baptists or the Shouters.
