‘Above & beyond’ First-timers, veterans share St. Patrick’s Day Festival experience

St. Patrick's Day

After Savannah’s 195th parade ended, thousands flooded River Street for a huge celebration.

The St. Patrick’s Day Festival is a two-day event that brings people from near and far — first-timers and veterans.

Joy Spear is no stranger to Savannah. She said that when her friends asked her to come this year, it was a no brainer.

“They called me up and said, ‘We got a party bus going down to Savannah for the holiday weekend’ or whatever I said, ‘OK let’s go,’” Spear told News 3.

Another group of ladies also decided to make the trip, driving down a couple of hours from Charleston.

“Oh, it’s St. Paddy’s week, so you know we had to come,” said Kiasha Smalls.

It’s this group’s first time in Savannah, and they say it won’t be the last.

“I’m feeling great! You guys are going above and beyond. So this will definitely be another road trip for the ladies,” Spear said, adding that her favorite part about the day was River Street.

It’s one of the biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the nation, and some say it tops the rest.

“Chicago and New York have nothing on this one,” said Tina Foster, who has been coming to Savannah’s festival for more than a decade. “And it’s always been awesome. This is the best one.”
