JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WTLV) – The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens welcomed an adorable new addition to their family this week.
The zoo’s 42nd giraffe calf was born at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday weighing in at a whopping 187 lbs. and standing 6’04’’ tall.
Zookeepers, who noticed birth activity around 4:30 a.m., rushed to supervise the birth and make sure everything went smoothly.
The birth of this baby is extra special because it is the 18th and last offspring of the zoo’s beloved male giraffe, Duke who died in December of 20-18 from an age-related degenerative disease.
Zoo officials expect mom, Naomi and her baby to be on exhibit with the rest of the herd by the weekend.
The calf, who has not yet been named, was on exhibit with her mom Naomi on Friday. The zoo posted a video of her debut on Facebook.
