PORT WENTWORTH, Ga. (WSAV) – A woman who is believed to have jumped from a bridge on Interstate 95 and into the Savannah River Thursday has been recovered, authorities say.
According to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO), earlier in the day witnesses saw a woman park her car on the bridge at the Georgia-South Carolina line and jump into the river.
The woman was recovered late in the afternoon, the Effingham County Emergency Management Agency said.
News 3 is told her family members have been notified. ECSO has not yet released her name.
The incident caused some traffic delays near the scene for several hours but crews remained in the area to keep traffic moving. ECSO said traffic was mostly caused by drivers slowing down to look.
The following agencies also aided in the search and recovery: Savannah Fire Rescue, Chatham County Marine Patrol, Georgia DNR, South Carolina DNR, Rincon Fire, Port Wentworth Police, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Wayne County DNR, Effingham Fire and the Effingham County Coroner’s Office.
