Authorities say a woman shot outside of a home on Hilton Head Island morning died Friday.
The suspected shooter, 41-year-old Jose Guzman-Rosario, was found dead of an apparent suicide on Thursday, the day authorities say he shot Karma Young, 44.
According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), it appears Guzman-Rosario shot himself with the same gun he used to shoot Young at Point Comfort Club.
BCSO says the incident unfolded Thursday around 10:00 a.m. when an unknown man, later identified as Guzman-Rosario, shot Young and fled the scene in a vehicle.
She was flown to a Savannah hospital due to the severity of her injuries where she later died, according to Beaufort County Coroner Edward Allen.
Upon further investigation, BCSO found that Young had recently complained that a man, who she knew, had harassed her.
“Looking into the harassment further, investigators found disturbing text messages from an unknown male subject on the woman’s mobile telephone, one message as recent as yesterday,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Shortly after 11:00 a.m., Jasper County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the scene of a death at Brook Mill apartments in Ridgeland. There, deputies found Guzman-Rosario dead inside of his apartment.
The deputies said Guzman-Rosario had sustained what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Authorities say it appears the same caliber handgun was used in both shootings. Guzman-Rosario’s ethnicity, vehicle and clothing descriptions also matched witness descriptions.
BCSO says the investigation is ongoing. A forensic autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause and manner of Young’s death.
