UPDATE: Officials ID couple dead in Southbridge murder-suicide

Authorities have identified those involved in an apparent murder-suicide in Southbridge.

According to the Chatham County Coroner, the deceased are 78-year-old Susan Burnette and 74-year-old Thomas Nelson Burnette, who was retired from the Army.

The coroner did not confirm who was responsible for the shooting but said typically it is the male.

Around noon Monday, officers were called to do a welfare check at the Burnette’s home on Myrtlewood Drive, according to the Chatham County Police Department (CCPD).

The department says the residents were found dead upon arrival.

“Preliminary findings indicate the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide,” CCPD stated in a press release. “Confirmation of this will come after the autopsies are performed by the Chatham County Coroner’s Office.”

News 3 spoke with neighbors who did not want to go on camera but said they are shocked to find out the news about the Burnettes.

Residents remember them as kind people who were always willing to lend a helping hand.
