Two deadly shootings in 24 hours in the Lowcountry

Crime & Safety

A community rarely afflicted with crime is reeling after two homicides in less than 24 hours.

A woman was shot to death in Bluffton. A man was killed on Hilton Head Island.

Captain Bob Bromage, from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, said he does not believe the two incidents are related. However, both happened outside, in areas generally free of violence.

“Mammy Grant Road is kind of a cut-out, it’s kind of a rural area. Squire Pope Road- it’s a residential area as well. Both Blazing Star Lane on Hilton Head Island and Mammy Grant Road in Bluffton are not gated communities”

Both shootings are still under investigation.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says 29-year-old Rockiem Graham was shot to death on Hilton Head Island Saturday.  Graham was found dead in the back seat of a vehicle at approximately 7:45 p.m.

The vehicle—driven by one of Graham’s associates—was subject of a traffic stop at the intersection of U.S. 278 and Indigo Run Plantation, after Sheriff’s Office deputies observed it being driven recklessly. Graham, who is from Hilton Head Island, is believed to have died as a result of gunshot wounds. Investigators located the outdoor crime scene on Blazing Star Lane— off Squire Pope Road—where they collected evidence for evaluation at the Sheriff’s Office Forensic Services Laboratory. A forensic autopsy on Graham is scheduled to be performed Monday at the Medical University of South Carolina.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of a woman found shot to death Saturday night.

54-year-old Betty Brayshaw, of Bluffton, was identified as the victim in Saturday night’s homicide that occurred off of Mammy Grant Road in Bluffton.

Brayshaw’s family members called 911 around 9:35 p.m. when Brayshaw appeared at their residence with gunshot wounds. Sheriff’s Office deputies and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to the Mammy Grant Road residence, where EMS paramedics confirmed Brayshaw was dead. Sheriff’s Office investigators and Crime Scene Unit personnel located the outdoor crime scene and collected evidence.
