Two arrested for involuntary manslaughter in Colleton Co. investigation

Crime & Safety

What started as a call for a “physical altercation” ended in two arrests for involuntary manslaughter.

According to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, on Wednesday, March 6, deputies responded to a home on Macon Lane due to a physical altercation there.

Upon arrival, authorities found one person unresponsive. CPR was performed but was unsuccessful in reviving the individual.

CCSO says the other individuals in the home cooperated with questioning. Due to the unknown cause of death at the time, deputies were unable to place a hold on the suspects who were released.

The body was sent for an autopsy which determined the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head.

As a result, CCSO arrested Joseph Thomas Benton and Rebecca Beard and charged them with involuntary manslaughter.

Their bond hearing is set for Thursday at the Colleton County Detention Center.
