A suspect is in custody after barricading himself inside his home with a gun.

According to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO), deputies were dispatched to the residence on Sand Pine Court Wednesday night in reference to a domestic assault.

ECSO says the incident occurred after details came to light about several counts of alleged child molestation against James Daryl Thayer, 48.

Thayer is a registered sex offender. In 1992, he was arrested and convicted of child molestation and served 8 years in prison.

He was released in 2000 and was being monitored by the Effingham County Sex Registry Unit. ECSO says Thayer, however, did not have any restrictions on his residency or employment due to a law passed in 2003.

After a brief standoff with deputies on Wednesday, ECSO says Thayer came out of the home. Their Investigative Division is investigating the latest allegations.

ECSO says they expect to formally charge Thayer on Monday.

He was transported to the Effingham County Jail and charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
