Authorities are investigating following the discovery of human remains in a marsh area near the Beaufort County Airport.
According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), a resident found the remains near the airport on Lady’s Island early Sunday afternoon.
The sheriff’s office said the remains were “partially skeletonized” and appeared to be those of an adult male.
After the area was examined for evidence, Beaufort County Coroner Edward Allen removed the remains from the scene.
BCSO said that due to the condition of the remains, the cause of death was not immediately apparent.
A forensic autopsy will be performed this week to help determine the cause and manner of the man’s death, as well as his identity.
