COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – A woman has been charged with child abuse after authorities say she shook and injured an infant she was baby-sitting.

Lt. Curtis Wilson of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department tells local media that 38-year-old Carmen Flores Bautista was arrested Wednesday and charged with great bodily injury to a child.

Investigators responded Tuesday evening to Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. Wilson says they determined that Bautista had been baby-sitting the 8-month-old girl and, “shook the baby violently, causing extensive injuries to the child.”

The baby was rushed to the hospital, where Wilson says she remained in critical condition Wednesday with multiple contusions and a “severe” brain injury.

It’s unclear if Bautista has an attorney.
