Detectives with the Savannah Police Department are looking into the death of a 28-year-old mother of four from Savannah.
But the department called in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to look into an officer-involved shooting of a Garden City man identified by witnesses as having a gun in a nearby room.
The deadly incident happened at America’s Best Value Inn motel in the 4000 block of Ogeechee Road late Saturday night. The Savannah Police Department (SPD), responding with officers from Georgia State Patrol, converged on the scene finding Sandee Warren, 28, dead from an apparent gunshot wound near the motel’s lobby.
Witnesses told police that a man with a gun was in a nearby room.
Police say when officers approached that room, gunfire was exchanged between police and 24-year old Joshua Boyd. He died at the scene after the shootout with police.
No officers were injured in the exchange, but they report finding a handgun in Boyd’s room. GBI is investigating Boyd’s shooting while SPD investigates Warren’s homicide.
News 3 looked into Boyd’s criminal record, finding a report filed in Garden City by responding officers on May 24, 2017. That incident is listed as simple battery, cruelty to children in the third degree, and criminal trespass.
In the complaint, Sandee Warren told officers that Joshua Boyd was her boyfriend and that they had a fight. The report says Warren’s children were present when it happened. Boyd was gone when police arrived.
The report goes on to say Warren did not want to press charges at the time, but she did indicate she wanted a police report to get a restraining order. News 3 has not confirmed whether Warren and Boyd were in a relationship when the shooting happened or if a restraining order was in place.
The National Gun Violence Memorial website has posted Warren’s photo. The site says it launched in Dec. 2015 to humanize the problem of gun violence by showing victims’ faces and telling their stories.
Warren’s friends confirm she was the mother of four son’s between the ages of four and 15 years old.
The investigation into Warren and Boyd’s deaths continues.
